The First 20 Hours - How to Learn Anything

Updated: Mar 3, 2022

Have you ever thought how much you can learn in just 20 hours of study and practice? See on this video a summary of Josh Kaufman's book.

Imagine if you could learn most of the basic life skills in a short period of 20 hours. It would be wonderful, woudn't it?

Well, know that 10,000 hours is the necessary training time for you to become a world-class competitor. Or for you to reach the top of a very competitive field. And that time corresponds to 5 years of work in a full-time job. This myth became accepted until people began to think of this number - 10,000 hours - as the time it takes to learn anything. But that's not true. It is possible to learn an activity enough to enjoy it, such as a sport, in just 20 hours. As long as you know exactly what to do in those first twenty hours. Here are some steps you can follow:

  1. Break the skill down into small steps - and start with the first. Instead of learning piano, for example, you can learn to play a song. And you can immediately start practicing a piece of that song.

  2. Learn just enough theory to be able to correct yourself. Did you learn the basics? Start training - and make the necessary corrections as soon as you spot a bug.

  3. Practice smart. Break your practice into small pieces, and focus enough to make the most of your mind. If you just practice effortlessly, the result will not be enough.

Once you've mastered the basics, you'll be excited to move on, because you'll see results.
